Course Outline

This course is intended for students, researchers, scientists, managers and anyone responsible for written technical communication.

The course will consist of 40% lecture and 60% practical exercises using the LaTex system. Students are encouraged to bring in their own documents to convert from Word to LaTex to gain familiarity. Course content will include:

Setting up a document
Preparing to write
Spacing, fonts and size
Special characters
Compiling and error handling
Math equations and in-line references
Using packages
Structure, lists, and sections
Colors, fonts, and highlights
Labels and Cross-References
Figures and Tables
Tables of content and appendices
Large documents and reports
Bibliographies and citations
Viewing and printing documents

Requirements

There are no specific requirements needed to attend this course. The student should bring an internet-enabled laptop with web browser and administrative priveleges to install necessary LaTex related software if they have not done so already. The main software required are MikTex (the LaTex compiler), TexMaker (a useful LaTex editor) and JabRef (for bibliography references).
